Shenandoah Valley Showers Today; Stronger Storms Across SW VA

(Posted Thursday 4/9 12:30 pm)

Image 1 shows the Shenandoah Valley now well on the east side of the boundary separating cool air from the warmer, more unstable air to our west. It'll be mostly cloudy and damp feeling through most of the day. A few thunderstorms will develop along and west of the boundary later this afternoon and evening. I don't think we'll see a repeat of yesterday with these weakening quickly once crossing the mountains into our more stable air.. just expect showers.

The best chance for strong storms in Virginia will be right along either side of where the boundary is intersecting the state today. Anywhere from far southwest VA up through the New River Valley and over towards Danville should be on the lookout for a few storms capable of producing heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and some small hail. The Sterling NWS local WRF model in image two is picking up on the potential quite well. Look for initiation sometime late this afternoon (2-4 pm or so).
The boundary will lift north overnight into tomorrow leading to much warmer air and a better chance for widespread thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and evening. This will likely end up our bigger day in regards to severe weather, especially along and east of the Blue Ridge.
