More Wintry Weather Possible Sunday

(Saturday 7pm Update)
Winter Weather Advisories have been expanded to include most of the state...take it easy on roadways tomorrow.  Advisory text depends on where you are...for Harrisonburg area: a coating to an inch of snow followed by up to 0.10" of ice.

(Saturday 3pm Update)
Winter Weather Advisories beginning to fly across the Shenandoah Valley and northern Virginia.  These will likely be expanded later this evening.

(Posted Saturday 12:30 pm)

Another wintry event is on tap for Sunday.  While not expecting this to be a huge deal, any amount of ice is always worth discussing.

Some disorganized upper level energy will pass to our northwest tonight into Sunday.  Moist air will get pumped into the region allowing light precipitation to start breaking out across the area Sunday morning.

Although temperatures are expected to eventually rise above freezing, a cold wedge will help provide a period of wintry weather at onset.  This wedge will take time to erode, especially since we still have decent snow pack.

Current Snow Depth
Many areas will start as a period of snow or sleet Sunday morning before quickly changing over to freezing rain.  I can't rule out a coating or so before this occurs.

We'll then generally see a glaze of ice before temperatures climb above freezing south to north through the day.  Ice accretion will be greatest just east of the Blue Ridge where cold air typically holds on the longest.

Fortunately, this system won't have a whole lot of precipitation to work with preventing a major ice storm.  All Virginia locations climb above freezing Sunday evening so not expecting many problems for the Monday morning commute.

Shenandoah Valley Thoughts
Timing: A brief period of sleet and snow Sunday morning (6am-10am)...pockets of light freezing rain continuing into the early afternoon...eventually changing to just light rain.

Amounts: A quick coating of snow/sleet (parts of the northern Valley may even see a quick inch) followed by a glaze of ice...and then rain.
