1/11: Another Minor Ice Event on Tap for Tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a Freezing Rain Advisory for the entire Shenandoah Valley for tonight through Monday AM.  Here are my thoughts...
  • Light precipitation will develop from southwest to northeast after midnight (a few scattered light flakes/sprinkles may get in here before that).  Evaporational cooling at onset will allow temperatures to cool down into the low 30s.
  • Rain will initially freeze on elevated surfaces until temperatures gradually warm above freezing after sunrise on Monday.
  • Ice amounts will be light across the Valley...generally a glaze on elevated colder surfaces (car tops, trees, bridges)
  • Parts of the northern Valley and locations right along the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge may hang onto subfreezing temperatures a bit longer where up to 0.10" of ice will be possible.
  • There could be a few slick spots on roadways...likely enough to cause some school delays

  1. I LOVE what you do here, and more often on the money than any other forecasts! I live in Centreville VA (Western Ffx) and I drive to Springfield for work and my wife drives to Hyattsville MD (Northern PG Cty). We, and I'm sure others, wold LOVE to see the entire beltway in your maps, even if you don't provide a written forecast for that area.

    1. Thanks, I appreciate it. I'll be sure to include the entire beltway next time.
