Weather geek image of the day...this afternoon's visible satellite overlaid with 925 mb (roughly 2,500 feet up) winds.
You can see how clouds are being steered clockwise around a high drifting off the North Carolina coast. This kind of flow brings lots of warm, moist air into the area. When this air reaches the mountains, it is forced to rise, cool, and expand leading to widespread cumulus cloud development (noted by the brighter white cloud tops) and a few scattered showers and storms. These will be possible across the Shenandoah Valley through the rest of the afternoon and evening with a very similar pattern expected Wednesday.
