1/8: Watching a Clipper Friday and then Some Southern Stream Moisture Early Next Week

Thursday, January 8th 5am
Well we made it through the coldest night of our arctic blast with temperatures dropping into the single digits this AM up and down the Shenandoah Valley.  A few higher elevations towards the West Virginia border even dipped below zero.   Although the next several days will be cold, we will start to moderate...especially as we head into the weekend.  Keeping an eye on a few things:

1) Clipper on Friday: Another clipper will drop out of Canada and swing just north of the Great Lakes tomorrow.  This track is too far north for much moisture to get into the Valley, but there will be another round of light upslope mountain snow showers early Friday as its trailing cold front passes through.  As usual, the best chance will be from Snowshoe to Elkins to Garret County in Maryland...but the far western portions of Bath and Highland counties towards the WV/VA line could also see a few flakes.

2) Southern Stream System + Left Over Cold Air Next Week: There is decent model agreement that there will be southern stream (both Gulf and Atlantic) moisture that works into the area early next week.  Although our arctic air mass will be retreating and we won't be in the most favorable snow pattern, there should be enough left over cold air to at least make the forecast a bit interesting---especially with how strong this blast has been.  Too early to talk specifics but the Monday-Wednesday time frame should be monitored for the possibility of another wintry event (we could be talking multiple precipitation types).  Will continue to have updates on this threat through the rest of the week and into the weekend.
